Have you ever been to a Conference or Symposium and been so inspired by the day that not only did you come out more knowledgeable in your field but also made many new friends too?

Well, if you love food and cooking and would enjoy spending a day learning from among a broad range of Hands-On Cooking Classes to Instructional Food Topics and Panels all while making some new friends in the food world then consider joining in on the day’s fun as Philadelphia Les Dames d’ Escoffier presents its annual Culinary Show: Cuisine, Culture and Community: A Global Celebration of Women and Food.

The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College on Walnut Street in Philadelphia will be rockin’ the house beginning at 8:00 AM on Saturday, May 4th as the doors open to this full day packing opportunities for foodies of all kinds to meet and learn from chefs, restaurateurs, cookbook authors, media personalities, bloggers, wine and spirits specialists, educators, and farmers.

Dames Chapter President, Kathy Gold will formally Present this year’s Program.

Kicking off the day over breakfast (and a few chuckles, if you enjoy a little irreverent humor mixed in with some sound life learning observations and experiences based on her long career in the culinary world)  is this year’s Keynote Speaker, Television Celebrity, famed Southern Cookbook Author, and d’ Escoffier Grand Dame, Nathalie Dupree.

Dupree will also sign copies of her most recent cookbook: The Art of Southern Cooking.

Squeezed between Breakfast, Lunch and a late afternoon Wine Reception hosted by Wente Family Estates Vineyards (yes, everyone loves food and wine in this group) are Four Forty-Five Minute Sessions where attendees make advance choices of one class among  each of the four session category segments. With so many great choices, and sessions offered at varying times, the most difficult part is deciding which to choose.

Among the enticing choices in the Hands-On Cooking Class Session, I ultimately decided on the Cuban Cooking Class with Chef Marta Quintana and, The Olive: From Harvest through Processing with Grand Tasting Master from one of Italy’s great oil producing families in Italy, Andrea Gradassi. Later Fabio Auguardo, olive oil expert will share distinctive techniques on interactive olive oil tasting. During the Olive time slot, I shall miss Chef Jason Robert’s of “The Chew” and Chef Sarah Ginn of Pure Fare teaching the Hands-On Gluten Free Baking Class.

Other classes I will attend at the event include Science and the Flavor of Salt with Marcia Pelchat of Monell Chemical Senses Center, then passing up Georges Perrier (Bibou) on Women and their Role in the French Kitchen. Finally, by sheer default, I will finish my fourth session with The 50 Best Plants on the Planet, now this is anyone’s guess what I might expect, but one thing for certain, I am sure it will be fun and informative.

Another of the Presenter’s include one of Philadelphia’s foremost Culinarians and this year’s Event Chair, Aliza Green, as she demonstrates how to prepare hand stretched Pasta from her cookbook: Making Artisan Pasta. Green’s Pasta Cookbook made the list as Cooking Light’s Top 100 Cookbooks of the last 25 years. A couple of the Dames, including Green are up for James Beard nominations on selected writing pieces to be announced the day before the Culinary Event so lots of excitement will surround awards and the honors of nomination on this day too.

Artisan Pasta cover high-res

The ticket prices for the day’s event is a bargain at $105 dollars for non-members, especially given the current price of a single cooking class typically runs between fifty and seventy-five dollars.

The price includes all of the days meals and events, and a goodie bag to take home sampling a variety of food related items contributed from a few food and industry vendors.

Cuisine, Culture, & Community: A Global Celebration of Women & Food is also a fundraiser supporting educational scholarship and Green Tables initiatives. Underwriting Sponsors include: Shop Rite, The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, Roland Foods, and ESCA Enterprises, Inc…

You can register for the event directly off the Les Dames d’ Escoffier International, Philadelphia web site. For any further questions contact Event Chair, Aliza Green by email at cranberrybean@comcast.net

With a full, exciting  day planned, why not  come on out and  join in on the fun, participate in some food learning experiences and make some new friends in the mix,  hope to see you there.
